Jasmine Yow
Jasmine Yow is a published author and a final year journalism student from Malaysia. Eager to expand her horizons and sharpen her journalistic skills, Jasmine transferred to UniSA, Adelaide in February 2010. Jasmine’s one year in Australia has been filled with many new experiences: little surprises sprung by changing seasons, fun patches of tree-climbing, mountain-biking, crabbing, and frolicking in the sun, interesting experiences gained through working with different organizations, and enjoying the hospitality of the Australian people.
Jasmine was given a copy of the Insider ’10 when she stepped on Aussie soil, fresh-faced, bright-eyed, and eager to experience Aussie life. She was delighted to find helpful information in the magazine about food places and finding casual jobs, but more than that, her adventurous alter-ego was enticed by the diverse range of activities described in the magazine. When contribution calls were issued at the end of the year, the call to share useful information with international students resonated within her. She wanted to invite other international students in Australia to embark on their own unique journey of discovery and inspire them to engage with local culture.
In her free time, Jasmine loves admiring handmade goodies, eating oysters in Glenelg, reading Frankie, and visiting the Gilles Street Market. She finds friendship and community at a local church, and invests a lot of time helping new students fit into their new lives in Adelaide. She is also passionate about social justice and volunteers weekly with Amnesty International in Adelaide. Easily moved by beauty and movement, Jasmine dances through her words whenever her feet fail to take off. Her book, Behind That Shiny Resume, can be found on Amazon.com.
